All Ottawa paramedics surveyed faced violence, but most didn’t report due to normalization and distrust; service will improve oversight and reporting.
A recent audit found that all 128 Ottawa paramedics surveyed experienced workplace violence, with 37% reporting monthly incidents and 21% weekly, yet 82% did not report due to perceptions that it’s part of the job, minor incidents, or distrust in follow-up.
The audit also uncovered serious flaws in controlled substance management, including poor documentation and expired drug handling.
The Ottawa Paramedic Service has accepted recommendations to improve reporting, oversight, and support, including forming an external working group to standardize definitions and streamline processes.
