A 23-year-old man, Sharuyan Sasikumar, was sentenced to eight years in prison after a drink-driving crash on September 25, 2024, that killed his 32-year-old friend Shejuti Pasha, a Keele University master’s student.
Sasikumar, who had consumed whisky before driving, lost control of his Toyota Icon at around 82mph on High Street in Knutton, mounting the pavement, striking a lamppost, and crashing into railings that pierced the back seat, fatally injuring Pasha.
He registered 59 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath—above the 35-microgram legal limit.
The court heard the car’s lights flickered during the return trip, and witnesses reported excessive speed.
Sasikumar, who had no prior convictions, admitted driving and expressed remorse.
He was also banned from driving for 11 years and four months.
