A 22-year-old man sentenced to 6.5 years for a violent crime spree after being released from jail.
A 22-year-old Newcastle man, Matthew James Frederick Kelly, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison for a violent crime spree in October 2024, just days after his release from jail.
He was convicted of forcing a man at gunpoint to transfer $300 via PayID using an axe, then attacking a 66-year-old man with a knife, slashing him before fleeing in a stolen car.
Police traced him through a mobile number, arrested him after a chase, and found a metal pole and car keys on him.
Kelly admitted to assault with intent to rob, demanding property by threats, and resisting police.
Judge Timothy Gartelmann set a non-parole period of four years and three months, making Kelly eligible for release in February 2029.
A co-accused received at least one year in prison.
