A 67-year-old Australian man saved a drowning teacher at a waterfall, earning a bravery medal for his heroic act.
On January 4, 2024, Michael Cordell, a 67-year-old New South Wales man with a history of heart problems, rushed to rescue a 53-year-old teacher swept into a dangerous whirlpool at Nethercote Falls during a semi-flood.
Despite the extreme conditions, he jumped into the churning water, using a rope to attempt a rescue before retreating to stay with the victim’s wife until emergency services arrived.
The man was found unresponsive after being in the water for several hours and later pronounced dead.
In late 2024, Cordell was awarded a bronze medal by the Royal Humane Society of NSW for conspicuous bravery, recognized as an ordinary person who acted with extraordinary courage and compassion under life-threatening circumstances.
