A 29-year-old Afghan man, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was arrested after ambushing two National Guard soldiers near the White House on Thanksgiving Eve.
Lakanwal, who entered the U.S. in 2021 under the Biden-era Operation Allies Welcome program and received asylum in April 2025, was wounded in a shootout and now faces federal terrorism charges.
The two soldiers, critically injured, are recovering.
President Trump condemned the attack as an “act of evil,” paused all Afghan immigration processing, and called for a review of Afghan arrivals under the prior administration.
