WMNF honored Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” on the 60th anniversary of the 1965 littering incident that inspired it.
On November 27, 2025, radio station WMNF 88.5 FM honored Arlo Guthrie’s Thanksgiving classic “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” as its Song of the Day, marking the 60th anniversary of the real-life 1965 incident in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where Guthrie and a friend were arrested for littering after dumping garbage on a hillside.
The event, inspired by Guthrie’s friendship with Alice Brock, who co-owned a church-turned-restaurant, led to a $25 fine and a cleanup effort.
The song, rooted in truth and reflecting countercultural themes, has become a seasonal tradition on U.S. radio stations.
Alice Brock died on November 21, 2024, at age 83.
