Whitecourt opposes Alberta’s plan to eliminate a rural seat and restructure West Yellowhead, citing reduced rural representation.
The Town of Whitecourt is opposing Alberta’s proposed electoral map changes, which would eliminate a rural legislative seat in northern Alberta and restructure the West Yellowhead riding, sparking concerns over reduced rural representation.
Council unanimously backed a formal objection, criticizing the plan as harmful to northern communities.
The changes, driven by declining population growth in the region, would merge or shift several rural ridings, including the creation of new constituencies like Peace River–Notley and Mackenzie.
The Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission says the new West Yellowhead riding would have a population of about 49,455, near the northern average but below urban ridings.
Public comments on the proposal are open until December 19.
