Wenzhou, China, earned two UNESCO honors for protecting cultural heritage and promoting sustainable development.
Wenzhou, a city in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, received two UNESCO recognitions within two weeks for its work in preserving intangible cultural heritage, promoting cultural tourism, and advancing sustainable development.
The honors were announced during the 2025 Maritime Silk Road Urban Cooperation & Development Conference, attended by over 300 global participants.
UNESCO’s assistant director-general for culture praised Wenzhou’s long history as a maritime trade and cultural exchange hub, its systematic protection of traditional knowledge—including ancient Chinese grammar—and its integration of heritage into education and innovation through workshops and research centers.
The city, with over 5,000 years of civilization and more than 2,210 years as an urban center, now safeguards 35 national, 159 provincial, and 836 municipal heritage items.
