U.S. to launch land operations against Venezuelan drug traffickers, expanding military efforts amid regional buildup and disputed claims.
President Trump announced that the U.S. will soon begin land-based military operations against suspected Venezuelan drug traffickers, shifting from maritime interdictions after claiming 85% of drug shipments have been stopped at sea.
The expansion follows a major U.S. buildup in the Caribbean, including the USS Gerald R. Ford and over 15,000 troops under Operation Southern Spear, which has already carried out more than 20 strikes on suspected drug vessels since September, causing over 80 deaths.
The administration also labeled Venezuela’s Cartel de los Soles a foreign terrorist organization—a designation President Maduro rejected as a pretext for regime change.
No legal justification or operational details for land missions have been released.
