Two Delhi traders were arrested in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, after attempting to cremate a mannequin to fraudulently claim a ₹50 lakh insurance payout.
Police say they used a fake identity to secure a life insurance policy, staged a cremation with funeral supplies, and were caught when staff grew suspicious.
The suspects, including Kamal Somani, confessed to the scheme to settle debts, using forged documents of an unaware man named Anshul.
Authorities verified Anshul’s alibi via video call, and two associates remain at large.
