Starting December 1, 2025, small pets can ride on public buses in Greater Christchurch during off-peak hours—weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and after 6:30 p.m., plus weekends and holidays—under new rules.
Pets must be in a carrier no larger than 58.4 cm x 38.7 cm x 33 cm or be a small dog on a leash with a basket muzzle.
Only one pet per passenger over 16 is allowed, and pets must not sit on seats or interfere with accessibility needs.
Owners are responsible for cleanup, and entry may be denied if a pet causes disturbance or safety concerns.
The policy applies to Metro services in Christchurch, Waimakariri, and Selwyn but not on school buses, double-decker upper decks, or the Diamond Harbour ferry, where leashed dogs must stay at the rear.
