Punjab's traffic crackdown includes fines, jail, and vehicle auctions, but sparked violent protests over bus contract reforms.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved major traffic reforms, including auctioning repeat offenders’ vehicles, banning rickshaws on key Lahore roads, and imposing up to six months in prison for underage driving, as part of a province-wide crackdown.
The reforms, aimed at improving road safety, eliminate government vehicle exemptions, mandate proper parking for marriage halls, and provide immediate compensation to families of accident victims.
A 30-day deadline was set to improve traffic flow in Lahore, with similar measures to follow in other cities.
Meanwhile, a violent protest by contractual transport workers erupted over the Kilometre Scheme, which allows private contractors to operate buses, sparking strikes, clashes, and injuries, including a police officer set on fire.
Over 25 protesters were arrested, and bus services across Punjab were severely disrupted.
