Nova Scotia’s government has released a draft report recommending a formal apology to Mi’kmaw and African Nova Scotian communities for historical environmental racism, including the placement of hazardous facilities in their neighborhoods.
The 2023-appointed panel’s findings, disclosed in June 2024, also call for increased funding, public reporting, and defining environmental racism in policy.
Despite the recommendations, Premier Tim Houston has not committed to an apology, citing upcoming consultations with panel members.
