NHS Wales tests permanent mental health referrals via NHS 111 Wales Press 2 to cut waits and improve care.
NHS Wales’ Hywel Dda University Health Board is considering making permanent a single mental health referral pathway for adults in three counties, building on a temporary model in Ceredigion since March 2025.
Non-urgent GP referrals would go to NHS 111 Wales Press 2 for phone assessments by wellbeing practitioners under nurse supervision, aiming to cut wait times—from up to 28 days to under two minutes—and improve care integration.
Urgent cases would still be referred directly.
Early results show faster responses and proactive follow-up for non-engagement.
Public feedback is being collected from December 8, 2025, to February 9, 2026, to shape a consistent, equitable model aligned with the Welsh Government’s mental health strategy.
