Mexican Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero resigns after seven years, paving way for new leadership under President Sheinbaum.
Mexican Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero has resigned after nearly seven years in office, stepping down to become an ambassador as nominated by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The 86-year-old, who led the nation’s top prosecutor’s office since 2019, oversaw the extradition of 55 major drug traffickers to the U.S., including Rafael Caro Quintero.
His resignation, formally accepted by the Senate, comes amid political shifts under Sheinbaum’s administration and ongoing scrutiny of Mexico’s justice system and security policies.
The successor has not yet been announced.
