India to launch offline live sports, movies on cheap phones via new D2M tech, starting trials in Delhi and Bengaluru.
Indian consumers may soon access live sports, movies, and web series on affordable feature phones and smartphones priced between ₹2,000 and ₹2,500 without internet, via Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology.
Developed using India-made chipsets and leveraging Prasar Bharti’s content and existing telecom infrastructure, the service will launch with trials in Delhi and Bengaluru, followed by commercial tests in 19 cities within six to nine months.
A ₹500–600 dongle will enable smartphone users to access content without data.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting supports the rollout, which could require ₹8,000 crore in investment.
