Families of six victims killed in a April 13, 2024, mass stabbing at a Sydney shopping center are criticizing media coverage for broadcasting graphic images of the attack, victims’ bodies, and grieving relatives, calling it traumatic "trauma porn."
Joel Cauchi, 40, who was experiencing psychotic symptoms, attacked the crowd before being shot dead by police.
The families urged the NSW State Coroner to recommend the Australian Press Council develop advisory guidelines for covering mass casualty incidents.
They also plan to seek a referral of Cauchi’s former psychiatrist, Dr Andrea Boros-Lavack, to a regulatory body over concerns about her decision to discontinue his antipsychotic medication despite evidence of severe psychosis, and her conduct during testimony.
