A Canadian freighter ran aground in the Detroit River during a storm, but was refloated without injury or pollution.
The Canadian-flagged freighter Robert S. Pierson ran aground in the Detroit River on November 26, 2025, during a storm with strong winds and historically low water levels. The 19,000 dwt vessel, carrying 18,000 tons of stone, had anchored to weather the storm but was dragged downstream and grounded near downtown Detroit. Two tugboats assisted in refloating the ship by noon on November 27, and it was safely en route to Ohio with no injuries, pollution, or traffic disruptions. This marks the second grounding in the area within a month, following a similar incident involving the Paul Martin earlier in November, both linked to low water levels and severe weather.
