A bull shark killed a 25-year-old woman at a remote Australian beach; her 26-year-old partner fought it off and survived.
A 26-year-old Swiss diving instructor, Lukas Schindler, fought off a bull shark that fatally attacked his girlfriend, Livia Muhlheim, 25, at Kylies Beach, a remote, unpatrolled site north of Sydney.
The attack, believed to involve a shark at least three meters long, occurred shortly after Muhlheim recorded swimming with dolphins.
She lost her left arm and died on the beach.
Schindler, bitten twice on his leg, carried her to shore, called for help, and was airlifted to hospital in stable condition.
Authorities are reviewing GoPro footage and using drum lines and drones to track the shark.
The nearest shark detection system is 30 kilometers away.
The incident follows a fatal shark attack in September, renewing calls for better beach safety measures.
Police have contacted the Swiss consulate and the couple’s family.
