Winnipeg launches digital traffic tickets to cut errors and corruption, rolling out citywide by 2026.
The Winnipeg Police Service has launched a phased rollout of an electronic traffic ticket system, starting in select vehicles, to reduce paperwork, errors, and opportunities for corruption following a scandal involving a constable who voided tickets for bribes.
The digital system, part of the Smart Squad platform, will be expanded citywide by 2026.
While officials say the initiative was years in development and not directly tied to the corruption case, experts caution it won’t eliminate all risks, such as favoritism or data manipulation, and highlight ongoing concerns about police accountability and public trust.
