The White House seeks expanded drone-fighting powers for federal and local agencies ahead of major events, but faces Senate opposition over civil liberties concerns.
The White House is pushing Congress to grant federal agencies broader authority to disable drones near major events like the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics, aiming to enhance security through expanded powers for Homeland Security and Justice.
The proposal, tied to a defense spending bill, would allow federal action at public gatherings, critical infrastructure, and prisons, and extend capabilities to state and local law enforcement.
However, Sen. Ted Cruz, chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, opposes the measure, calling it an overreach of executive power and a threat to civil liberties.
His resistance could block the bill’s passage.
The administration has been negotiating the language since September and announced a $500 million initiative to help local governments prepare for drone threats.
While some lawmakers support stronger regulations, the measure’s future remains uncertain amid growing political friction.
