Western Australia's average daily imprisonment rate was 356 per 100,000 in the September 2024 quarter, a slight drop from the prior quarter but up 6% from a year earlier, ranking second nationally behind the Northern Territory.
The state also has the second-highest Indigenous incarceration rate at 4,574.4 per 100,000, down slightly from the previous quarter.
Nationally, 46,936 people were in custody, a marginal increase.
In NSW, violent crime rates remain historically low, but sexual assault and domestic violence persist, with rising reports likely due to better reporting and expanded legal definitions rather than increased incidents.
