A partial Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, the third found in North Dakota, has been discovered in Bowman County during a 2024 crocodile fossil search.
Nine or 10 bones, including vertebrae, a tail segment, a tooth, and an ankle, were recovered, with state paleontologist Clint Boyd calling such finds rare and scientifically valuable.
The site also yielded two mammoth fossils: one from a coal mine near Beulah with a 7-foot tusk indicating a Columbian mammoth, and another under a northwest North Dakota garage showing signs of severe malnutrition or bone disease—rare in North American specimens.
Small mammal bones suggest a broader prehistoric ecosystem.
The fossils are being preserved and may be displayed publicly.
