Poland selects Sweden’s Saab for 3 A26 subs to modernize navy and counter Russian threats.
Poland has chosen Sweden’s Saab to supply three A26 submarines in a deal worth about 10 billion zlotys ($2.73 billion), aiming to modernize its navy and bolster defense in the Baltic Sea amid concerns over Russia.
The submarines, expected to be delivered starting in 2030, will replace Poland’s sole Soviet-era Kilo-class sub and enhance regional deterrence.
The decision, part of Poland’s Orka program, follows competition from Germany, Italy, France, Spain, South Korea, and Saab-Kockum, with Sweden receiving support from the UK.
While no contract is signed yet, an intergovernmental agreement could be finalized by mid-2026.
The deal includes Sweden purchasing Polish defense equipment and providing a temporary submarine for training.
The A26s feature advanced capabilities like air-independent propulsion and modular mission systems.
