New Zealand’s navy flagship HMNZS Aotearoa transited the Taiwan Strait on November 5, 2025, as part of a deployment supporting UN sanctions monitoring on North Korea.
The vessel, which had been in Singapore for maintenance, sailed through the contested waterway in the South China Sea, where China and other nations have overlapping claims.
Chinese forces tracked and followed the ship, but New Zealand’s Defence Minister Judith Collins confirmed the transit was safe, professional, and in line with international law, including the right to freedom of navigation.
This marks the second consecutive year the Aotearoa has passed through the strait, reinforcing New Zealand’s military presence in the Indo-Pacific region.
