Ireland approves 900-MW Tonn Nua offshore wind project with 20-year contract at €98.72/MWh.
Ireland’s government has approved a joint venture between ESB and Ørsted to develop the 900-megawatt Tonn Nua offshore wind project, securing a 20-year contract at €98.72 per megawatt hour.
The project, expected to power about 800,000 homes, is on track for a final investment decision around 2031, with power generation potentially starting in the mid-2030s.
While still subject to regulatory approvals and value creation requirements, the win is seen as a positive signal for offshore wind, despite ongoing challenges in Europe’s sector.
A national offshore wind map, needed to unlock additional sites, is expected by 2027.
