A federal appeals court has upheld a nearly $1 million penalty against Donald Trump and his former lawyer Alina Habba for filing a frivolous 2022 lawsuit accusing Hillary Clinton, James Comey, and others of a conspiracy to undermine Trump’s 2016 campaign.
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court’s ruling that the lawsuit lacked legal and factual basis, calling it a bad-faith effort to harass opponents and abuse the judicial system.
The court found multiple claims, including a malicious prosecution claim without an actual prosecution, to be baseless.
The penalty, originally issued in 2023, will cover legal fees for the defendants.
