A Chilean telescope captured a new image of the Butterfly Nebula, revealing glowing gas from a dying star, released on its 25th anniversary.
A telescope in Chile has captured a stunning new image of the Butterfly Nebula (NGC 6302), a planetary nebula 2,500 to 3,800 light-years away in Scorpius.
Taken by the Gemini South telescope, the image reveals intricate, glowing gas wings formed by a dying star’s expelled material, with a hot white dwarf at the center.
The observation, released by NOIRLab on November 26, 2025, was selected by Chilean schoolchildren to mark the 25th anniversary of the International Gemini Observatory.
