The Town of Whitecourt approved spending nearly $600,000 on a telescopic seating system for its new Culture and Events Centre, set to open as part of a $54 million project.
The system, to be installed in a 3,554-square-metre space named Chelsea Grande, can expand to seat 322 people or retract completely, enabling flexible use for events, performances, and gatherings.
Selected as the only available provider in Canada, the U.S.-based Hussey Seating system allows multiple configurations and can support up to 700 people with a dividing wall.
The purchase was approved separately from the main construction contract in November 2024, following a sod-turning ceremony in July.
