UN Security Council visits Syria and Lebanon Dec. 4–6 to support transition and peace efforts amid regional tensions.
The UN Security Council will visit Syria and Lebanon December 4–6, marking its first official trip to Syria since Bashar al-Assad’s ouster.
The delegation, led by Slovenia’s ambassador Samuel Zbogar, will meet Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and civil society groups, following the council’s recent decision to lift sanctions on al-Sharaa.
The visit aims to support Syria’s political transition and rebuild trust in the UN.
The council will then travel to Beirut and visit UNIFIL peacekeepers in southern Lebanon amid ongoing tensions, as Lebanon accuses Israel of violating the November 2024 ceasefire with continued airstrikes and military presence.
The UN has called for an impartial investigation, while Lebanese officials warn of potential escalation.
UNIFIL’s mandate is set to end by 2027.
