A repeat offender sentenced to three years for dangerous, high-speed driving while disqualified and uninsured.
Michael McDonagh, a 49-year-old with over 200 prior convictions including 126 road-related offenses, was sentenced to three years in prison for dangerous driving after he drove the wrong way on the Naas dual carriageway in June 2020 while disqualified, uninsured, and operating a stolen Skoda.
During a seven-minute police chase, he reached speeds up to 120 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, ran red lights, and weaved through traffic, prompting police to end the pursuit due to safety risks.
The car was recovered undamaged.
McDonagh, who was serving time in the UK, voluntarily returned to Ireland in October 2024.
Judge Martin Nolan called his actions reckless and dangerous, imposed a backdated sentence and a five-year driving ban, and expressed doubt he respected prior disqualifications.
