A 2019 raid on former superintendent Eamon O’Neill’s home is central to a trial over alleged attempts to pervert justice related to traffic fines.
A 2019 dawn raid on retired superintendent Eamon O’Neill’s home in Ennis, conducted by Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation officers, is central to an ongoing trial at Limerick Circuit Court.
The search, carried out at 6:30 a.m. under a warrant following O’Neill’s arrest, involved around ten officers and resulted in the seizure of multiple electronic devices, including six mobile phones, an iPad, and a USB stick.
Officers removed their raid jackets at the request of O’Neill’s partner, Sergeant Anne Marie Hassett, to reduce distress, particularly due to the presence of a child.
The operation, part of a probe into potential breaches of Section 62 of the Garda Síochána Act, did not lead to charges, but O’Neill and four serving gardaí now face 39 counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice related to traffic penalty notices.
The trial, expected to last several weeks, continues.
