A Quebec coroner blames systemic failures for the 2024 death of a quadriplegic man who died by MAID after worsened bedsores during a hospital stay.
A Quebec coroner has found systemic failures in the care of Normand Meunier, a 66-year-old quadriplegic who died by medical assistance in dying in March 2024 after severe bedsores worsened during a four-day ER stay in January 2024.
The report, released November 25, 2025, cited poor communication, inadequate equipment, inconsistent records, and lack of coordinated care despite repeated requests for a therapeutic mattress.
The coroner called for an advisory committee, better access to specialized beds, and cultural change valuing patient and family input.
Meunier’s wife described the hospital as negligent, and the CISSS des Laurentides acknowledged the findings and pledged improvements.
At least a dozen others supported by MEMO-Qc have since sought MAID due to similar care issues.
