Port Stephens Council approves development near wetlands for housing and services, sparking conservation concerns.
The Port Stephens Council has approved the Salamander Bay Place Plan, allowing new development near the Mambo Wetlands for housing, commercial, health, and community uses, despite opposition from conservationists who warn it threatens the wetlands’ ecological buffer zone.
Council Mayor Leah Anderson cited a projected 20,000-person population increase and state housing targets as justification, noting development won’t occur directly on the wetlands and includes protected areas.
Conservationists remain concerned, arguing the surrounding bushland is ecologically vital and plan to continue advocating for alternative sites and environmental protection.
