A 31-year-old New Zealand man, Frank Harris, was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison for attempting to decapitate his father with an axe in December 2024 during a dispute over a water tank for his microgreens business.
The attack, which occurred at their home in Tākaka, Golden Bay, left the 78-year-old father with severe injuries requiring 11 hours of emergency surgery.
Harris, who had set his cottage on fire and used cannabis before the incident, surrendered after believing he had killed his father.
The case, described as unusual due to Harris’s lack of criminal history, involved a restorative justice process where the family expressed forgiveness.
Justice Peter Churchman called the event an aberration, praising the family’s resilience.
The sentencing took place on November 26, 2025, in Nelson’s High Court.
