Mark Baumgartner, 56, executive director of anti-abortion group A Moment of Hope, was arrested on Nov. 25, 2025, and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in connection with a Nov. 14 shooting outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Columbia, South Carolina.
The incident occurred in a parking lot near the facility during a confrontation captured on video, where Baumgartner, wearing a lime-green vest, was seen spraying another man before a gunshot was fired.
The victim, a man in a black shirt, was hospitalized but has since been released.
Authorities confirmed Baumgartner’s arrest based on surveillance footage, witness statements, and cellphone videos, but did not confirm a motive or link to abortion services, stating the investigation is ongoing.
He is held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on a $50,000 cash bond.
Planned Parenthood stated all staff and patients were safe, affirmed its cooperation with law enforcement, and reiterated its stance against gun violence as a public health crisis.
