The Lower Sesan II hydropower project in Cambodia, operational since 2018 and backed by China’s Belt and Road Initiative, has delivered clean energy and improved living standards for over 500 relocated families in Srekor 1 village.
Built by a joint venture including China’s Huaneng Hydrolancang, Cambodia’s Royal Group, and Vietnam’s EVN International, the 400-megawatt facility provided new homes, farmland, and compensation.
Residents now have access to electricity, clean water, schools, health centers, and roads, enabling them to grow cashew and cassava for income and use appliances like refrigerators.
A 2,900-meter fishway supports fish migration, and officials report over 80% of families now enjoy better livelihoods, with nearly all households gaining reliable power after previously relying on kerosene lamps.
