Louisiana's former surgeon general, Ralph Abraham, appointed to top CDC role amid leadership vacuum.
Louisiana Surgeon General Ralph Abraham has been appointed principal deputy director of the CDC, the agency’s second-highest position, amid ongoing leadership changes.
His appointment, confirmed by the Department of Health and Human Services on November 25, 2025, comes after the August dismissal of CDC Director Susan Monarez.
Abraham, a former congressman and physician, previously halted Louisiana’s mass vaccination campaigns, expressed skepticism about COVID-19 vaccines, and faced scrutiny over medical credentials and public health decisions, including delayed alerts on a whooping cough outbreak.
The CDC remains without a permanent director.
