India has condemned China's detention of an Indian citizen, Prema Wangjom Thongdok, during a transit stop at Shanghai International Airport, calling it a violation of international air travel conventions and China’s own 24-hour visa-free transit rules.
The woman, who held a valid passport and was en route to Japan, reported being questioned and mocked by Chinese officials during an 18-hour ordeal before Indian consular intervention.
India reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of the country, a stance not acknowledged by China, which denied wrongdoing and claimed the individual’s rights were protected.
The incident has prompted high-level diplomatic protests from India, which continues to demand an explanation.
