A golden hare necklace from the 1979 *Masquerade* treasure hunt is auctioned in London after vanishing for decades.
A jewelled golden hare necklace, created in 1978 for Kit Williams’ 1979 puzzle book *Masquerade*, is set for auction in London for the first time in nearly 37 years, with an estimated value of £15,000 to £20,000.
The 18-carat gold piece, featuring a ruby eye and animal symbols, was hidden in Bedfordshire near a Catherine of Aragon monument as part of a real-world treasure hunt.
Though two Manchester physics teachers found it in 1982, another individual had earlier claimed it using personal connections.
The necklace vanished after being sold in the late 1980s, reemerged in 2009 after a BBC documentary traced it to Egypt, and is now being sold online by Sotheby’s alongside items like Elizabeth Taylor’s turquoise cuff and a necklace once owned by Dame Barbara Cartland.
