Fargo schools will name new elementary school Horace Mann, keeping the historic name despite mixed student views.
The Fargo School Board has unanimously chosen to name the city’s new elementary school Horace Mann, retaining the name of the existing school set to close in 2026 to make way for a $45 million, three-section building opening in 2028.
The decision, based on a community-driven process with over 430 submissions, reflects strong emotional and historical ties to the name, despite mixed student preferences.
The new school will serve about 444 students from grades K–5, consolidating students from Horace Mann-Roosevelt and Madison schools.
Finalists included North Star, Unity, Martin Luther King Jr., and Prairie Rose, while a proposal to name it after activist Charlie Kirk was not selected.
