College Boreal gets $150K to fight spotted wing drosophila and protect northern fruit crops.
College Boreal has received $150,000 from the Ontario Agri-Food Research Initiative to combat the spotted wing drosophila, an invasive fruit pest that has caused up to 100% crop losses in northeastern Ontario since its arrival in 2009.
The project, led by researchers Morel Kotomale and Jean Pierre Kapongo, will develop integrated pest management strategies using monitoring, reduced pesticides, and biological controls to protect cherries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries.
The research involves three northern farms and aims to support local agriculture, reduce economic losses exceeding $6.8 million annually, and strengthen food security through applied science.
