Colin Bettles steps down as GPA's first full-time CEO after five years, leaving behind a legacy of stronger farmer influence and the defeat of a contested biosecurity levy.
Colin Bettles has stepped down as Grain Producers Australia’s first full-time chief executive after nearly five years, leaving behind a legacy of strengthened farmer influence, particularly in opposing the Albanese government’s proposed biosecurity levy.
The levy, which would have required farmers to fund biosecurity while exempting other supply chain players, was scrapped in February amid broad opposition.
Bettles, a former journalist and aide to Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack, helped elevate GPA’s profile and launched a mental health initiative with agribusiness Nufarm.
His tenure included a 2024 hospitalization in San Francisco after a mugging, where he spent days in an induced coma.
The GPA board has not yet decided whether to advertise for a replacement or recruit directly.
Colin Bettles renuncia como el primer CEO a tiempo completo de GPA después de cinco años, dejando atrás un legado de mayor influencia de los agricultores y la derrota de una imposición de bioseguridad impugnada.
