China to bid on Panama Canal ports in $8.5B expansion, with contracts due by 2026.
China is expected to bid on building two new ports along the Panama Canal as part of an $8.5 billion infrastructure expansion plan, Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vasquez said, emphasizing equal competition for all international bidders.
The project includes new terminals, a gas pipeline, and a reservoir, with contracts to be awarded by late 2026 and operations starting in 2029.
While the U.S. has raised concerns over Chinese influence, particularly regarding Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison’s current port operations, a planned transfer to a U.S.-led consortium remains pending.
Other interested firms include Cosco Shipping Ports, PSA International, Maersk, and Evergreen.
The Panama Canal, which handles about 5% of global maritime trade, has been operated by Panama since 1999.
