A broken oxygen pump killed 1.2 million salmon at an Idaho hatchery on Nov. 18, 2025, delaying recovery efforts.
A malfunctioning oxygen pump at Idaho’s Rapid River Fish Hatchery on November 18, 2025, caused the death of about 1.2 million young Chinook salmon, roughly one-third of the hatchery’s annual output.
A failed alarm delayed detection, and despite a backup pump being activated, the brief loss of oxygenated water proved fatal.
The fish, about an inch long and destined for release in spring 2027, were part of a program to support Pacific Northwest fisheries.
The cause of the failure is under investigation, repairs are underway, and the hatchery is working with regional partners to minimize long-term impacts.
