Barrick reaffirms $7B Reko Diq copper project in Pakistan, targeting 2028 start with 200K tons annual output.
Barrick Mining Corp has reaffirmed its commitment to the $7 billion Reko Diq copper project in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, dismissing speculation about a potential withdrawal or sale.
The mine, a 50-50 joint venture with the Pakistani government, is set to begin production by late 2028, with initial output of 200,000 metric tons of copper annually and plans to double production.
It is projected to generate over $70 billion in free cash flow over 37 years and added 13 million ounces to Barrick’s gold reserves in 2024. Financing exceeding $2.6 billion is being secured by multilateral lenders, including the IFC and Asian Development Bank.
Despite security challenges and infrastructure hurdles, Barrick’s interim CEO Mark Hill confirmed the project remains a strategic priority, even as some board members consider restructuring due to concerns over risk exposure in emerging markets.
The project is central to Pakistan’s mining strategy and a flagship investment following Barrick’s return in 2022 after resolving a long-standing legal dispute.
