The Asian Development Bank has approved $48 million in additional funding for Pakistan’s Balochistan Water Resources Development Project, supporting irrigation improvements, watershed management, and a new piped water system in drought-prone areas.
The project targets the Zhob and Mula river basins, aiming to expand reliable water access to 16,592 hectares, including rain-fed farmland, through the completion of the Churi Infiltration Gallery and Siri Toi Dam, which will store 36 million cubic meters of water.
Co-financed by Japan and the High-Level Technology Fund, the initiative includes afforestation, soil conservation, and check dams to boost climate resilience and support agriculture, which employs 60% of the population and drives nearly two-thirds of the region’s economy.
