A 67-year-old Irish veteran pleads not guilty to murdering a retired army captain in County Kerry in February 2024.
A 67-year-old former Irish Defence Forces member, Thomas Carroll, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of 84-year-old Patrick O’Mahony, a retired army captain and registered firearms dealer, found dead from a close-range gunshot wound in County Kerry in February 2024.
The trial, underway at the Central Criminal Court in Limerick, centers on prosecutors' claim that Carroll, who visited O’Mahony to express sympathy after his wife’s death, shot him during their time together, then lied about the circumstances.
A post-mortem revealed gunshot residue on the victim’s clothing and body, confirming a fatal wound to the upper abdomen.
The case was initially treated as non-suspicious but turned into a murder investigation after a mortician reported a small wound.
Carroll, a respected veteran with a 37-year military career, denies the charge.
