A South Bend man fled police, jumped into the St. Joseph River, was rescued, and hospitalized before being jailed without charges.
A 56-year-old South Bend man, Deron Phillips, was taken into custody Monday after fleeing police during a traffic stop, leading to a chase that ended with him jumping into the St. Joseph River from the Colfax Avenue Bridge.
Officers rescued him from the cold, shallow water using a boat and rope, and he was hospitalized for evaluation before being booked into the St. Joseph County Jail.
Authorities have not yet filed formal charges.
