Safety concerns on Beaumont Street in Hamilton, including used needles, human waste, and antisocial behavior, will be delayed until December after the City of Newcastle council deemed the issue non-urgent.
Councillor Jenny Barrie’s motion for immediate action—such as reviewing licenses, expanding food services, and testing CCTV—was supported by residents and business owners but blocked by Greens deputy lord mayor Charlotte McCabe.
The council also admitted three letters requesting state government aid for homelessness and anti-social behavior were not sent in October 2024 but were later dispatched.
Residents and business owners, including Paul Murphy, criticized the delay, citing worsening conditions and stalled economic recovery.
The Hamilton Community Safety Committee continues pushing for a council-endorsed safety audit, with hopes that successful interventions could serve as a model for other areas.
The motion will be revisited in December.
